He uses Angor to find Merlin's Tomb and steal the Staff of Avalon, where he loses control over Draal and confronts the Trollhunters for the possession of the staff. Jim resists and shouts the words, “In the darkest hour, I burn brightest!” With that, Jim is able to fight back against Gunmar's brainwashing, and pushes him back. Gunmar has two large horns on his head which span out big. He is originally jealous and suspicious of Jim but later befriends him – acting as Jim's fighting tutor. However, Gunmar soon overpowers Draal, and brainwashes him to do his bidding. As a result, Tellad-Urr stole metals from human villages to forge weapons for Gunmar and his Gumm-Gumm rebels so that Gunmar could overthrow Orlagk the Oppressor as the new Gumm-Gumm King. To make sure the plan works and that Bular and Gunmar can still trust him, Stricklander swaps Jim's Amulet with a fake copy so that the real Amulet could be used to free Gunmar. However, he discovers it's Otto Scaarbach who is brainwashed by the real Gunmar, shortly before Otto explodes to his death.
Gunmar questions this before Morgana shoots at the crowd, killing many members of the army. Gunmar demands Usurna to find a changeling (albeit the remaining changelings in Arcadia, who are When Gunmar lunges at Jim, he reacts by summoning his Eclipse Blade and slices through the Skullcrusher's body. Immediately afterward, he noticed Jim is the new Trollhunter, and comments that Merlin chose a human child to be his Trollhunter. Angor, remembering what Stricklander once said to him, uses Draal as his leash, with Gunmar saying Draal will not make it out of the cavern alive. However, Jim takes the Staff of Avalon, but Gunmar and Angor arrive. As the residents panic, Gunmar's army emerge from the ground, invading the streets of Arcadia and attacking Arcadia.
