He's the same person Kara last saw seven months ago, but he's also somehow different (beyond him sporting a beard). However, he does reveal that when Mon-El returns, it's going to mix things up quite a bit. While the character has appeared to Kara in dreams and motivational visions, he's not fully back on the show yet in Season 3. Somehow he can now breathe on Earth despite the atmosphere still laced with traces of lead. Like him or not, Mon-El has a sort of refreshing innocence on Earth that it's difficult to imagine how that would change. This is pre-recorded so I didnt know at the time so yeah! Mon-El is also the son of the late king Lar Gand and the late queen Rhea, the ex-boyfriend of Kara Danvers and the ex-husband of Imra Ardeen. He told Kara that she made him want to be a better person, but space is big and we know he has enemies out there.Whether he comes back as a fully-fledged hero or, an alien rights activist, or maybe, a hardened criminal, it's going to be interesting. What's more, his ship is from Saturn (yes, there's life on Saturn) and this helps explain Mon-El's fluency. The details of his return and what he's up to are, of course, "shrouded in mystery" and Wood can't discuss them.
Mon-El is the former prince of Daxam, who crash-landed on Earth after escaping the ravaging of his home planet which was destroyed. Kara Danvers is struggling with a fear of abandonment on "He's carrying the baggage of where he's been and what he's been through," says Wood about the character in Season 3. Mon-El is definitely keeping secrets, and when he suddenly springs out of his hospital bed to attack some DEO agents and steal a device recovered from his ship, Supergirl is forced to lay Mon-El out. Rhea wanted Earth's blood laid upon Supergirl's hands. This is pre-recorded so I didnt know at the time so yeah!
That's all part of the mystery. By the time Mon-El does return, he might not even recognize everybody himself.
