To many, however, the end of slavery in the Caribbean was a big disappointment. For most enslaved people in British North America, however, the Act resulted only in partial liberation, as it only emancipated children under the age of six, while others were to be retained by their former owners for four to six years as apprentices. And not just Africans, who were snatched away from their homelands; or Native Americans, who were killed and displaced on their own land; there were other groups who are often forgotten by history and who also suffered from the horrors of forced labor.
They encouraged ex-slaves to legally marry, adopt the nuclear family model, and to take on Victorian gender roles which they believed were they path to achieving respectability and upward mobility.
